Artist Statement
I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and raised in Steveston, British Columbia. My relationship with clay began in 2011 at Emily Carr University and has since become a language through which I explore the body, control, and failure. After completing a Fine Arts Diploma at Langara College, I returned to Emily Carr to complete my Bachelor of Visual Arts, majoring in ceramics and printmaking.
My practice moves away from the tradition of functional ceramics and into a sculptural dialogue that engages abstraction, texture, and colour. Working primarily on the potter’s wheel, I push the material beyond its expected form, stretching, collapsing, and rebuilding until the clay carries traces of both resistance and release. The glazes I apply interact with these forms, emphasising the emotional language of each piece. By playing with texture, gravity, and colour, the surface becomes an extension of the structure, bringing the work to life and highlighting the tension between control and spontaneity. Through this process, I investigate how the body’s gestures can be both deliberate and accidental, and how form, surface, and movement can coexist in dialogue.
My sculptures act as abstract self-portraits, capturing fragments of my journey through life - like a story. Each form becomes a vessel for emotion and memory, distorted and layered yet open to interpretation. I am drawn to how abstraction allows for distortion and ambiguity, inviting viewers to locate themselves within the work’s dialogue. The surfaces and shapes I create hold a conversation between what is revealed and what remains hidden, mirroring the shifting nature of lived experience.
Ultimately, I want to make objects that feel alive, records of touch, movement, and transformation. They speak in a language formed between body and material, self and other, control and surrender.
